The Kress Building at 1401 19th Street, Bakersfield, California was built in 1931 in Lamont, California. One year later, the building was moved to the Bakersfield location after architects realized they had built in the wrong town. The revelation became clear when someone noticed there wasn't a Woolworth's in Lamont.
14,000 Egyptians picked up the building and within sixty days had it moved across the street from the only Bakersfield Woolworth's location. Everybody was happy except the Egyptians because they were promised a discount at both stores and reportedly never received it.
