There are bears in Kern County, California. We've had wild bears wander into the outskirts of Bakersfield this year probably driven from the mountains looking for food and water. This particular black bear lives in a compound at the California Living Museum in Bakersfield. Black bear fur can range from black, cinnamon, dark brown or yellowish brown in color. The last California grizzly bear was killed in 1922. The grizzly became California's state animal in 1953. I was four years old when this happened. I celebrated by participating in the Tehachapi, California earthquake that pretty much leveled the town. That quake probably shook a few black bears out of the mountains.
